Cleaners have a tough and dangerous job, it may seem that really they don't: its not all dusting waist height desks and a quick sweep though. Many cleaning jobs are dangerous for a number of reasons. Like trades such as those of builders plumbers and electricians cleaners have to go into a lot of different places which they may not be familiar with and may have to do work high up or which involves moving heavy objects; window cleaners and exterior cleaners have particularly dangerous jobs. The danger for cleaners though doesn't stop with danger to themselves but also includes danger to others and to property.

There is therefore plenty of insurance available to cleaners, that is often specialist insurance for cleaners, this includes public liability insurance, employer's liability insurance and also income protection insurance for self employed cleaners.

Window cleaners and cleaners who do exteriors of buildings such as gutters are of course at risk of falling, even if experienced there is still potential for a freak occurrence or something to be overlooked. Also though window cleaners can easily damage windows or other parts of a building if they are not careful; even more dangerously they could drop equipment such as a bucket of water that could severely injure or even kill someone below: likewise building exterior cleaners can drop items or even dislodge masonry. In these cases public liability insurance will be the difference between the cleaner or their employer being ruined or being able to carry on in business.

Other interior cleaners face dangers as well, they may have to work on ladders to reach some areas plus they also in industrial facilities such as factories have to work around machinery and may even specifically clean dangerous machinery: again they or their employer could need public liability insurance if they damage something, be it a vase or furniture in a home, machinery in a factory or a computer in an office. Also of course there is danger to others still, it could be that a contract cleaner doesn't put out warning signs and someone slips over and suffers a serious injury or chemicals are used and either left or not cleaned up properly that could burn eyes, skin or even be ingested in some cases such as where left on food preparation areas.

As an employer you need not just public liability insurance but also employer's liability insurance, it does protect you but more importantly protects your employees. Your employees are often the ones in dangerous situations, it can be assumed you do your best to ensure they are safe and have full training: but they are going often into other premises that you don't have control of and there is often the chance that something will have been overlooked. You will want to know that should an employee be injured or even killed that you can make sure they or their family get a payout to make sure they do not suffer financially from loss of income and other costs. If though you are a self employed cleaner then you will need slightly different insurance to protect yourself and your family. You will need public liability insurance still of course but also you may want loss of earnings insurance to make sure you can still pay essential bills if you are injured while working or in the case of your death your family will still receive an income.
